GOOGLE HELPS YOU PLAN DEATH

We have all amassed tonnes of data in our email, social network and online storage accounts, and our ability to decide what happens to all of it once we die has always been in doubt. Writing passwords down for someone else to find is clearly not a good idea, and there's always been the danger of important information being lost for good. Finally, Google has begun to address the problem. The new Inactive Account Manager settings page lets users nominate friends and family members to receive your data, or have it all erased. You can choose an inactivity period between 3 and 12 months, after which your preferred course of action will take place. As a safeguard, warning messages will be sent to your phone or secondary accounts. The data will include +1s, Blogger posts, Picasa albums and YouTube videos. Now, if only there was a way to leave all our purchased apps, music and movies to our next of kin.

GAMERS ENRAGED BY BUGS, DRM IN NEW SIMCITY

EA's big SimCity franchise resurrection was preceded by months of hype and mounting expectations, which peaked when early reviews rated it as 9.5/10 and above. However gamers who bought it were in for a rude surprise--at launch time, EA's servers crashes. Even worse, EA responded by reducing functionality and killing online features. Gamers, who never wanted the game to require a constant internet connection, also quickly discovered that traffic routing is completely illogical, and usable land area is laughably limited. EA still refused to allow offline play, claiming that calculations are offloaded to the cloud, but this has been proven to be untrue. EA hasn't yet responded to the latest set of revelations.

NOKIA PROMISES NOT TO SPY

Users of the Nokia Browser bundled with its latest phones might be happy that the app compresses data being sent and received in order to save on carrier charges, but should also be aware that their secure HTTP traffic is decrypted on the way to enable this compression. The fact is not disclosed in the privacy statement or user  agreement and affects any data that users enter on a secure site including bank details, usernames and passwords, etc. Nokia says its servers do not store copies of pages that users visit or any data entered, and that appropriate security measures are in place, but this definitely makes Nokia's servers an inviting target for attackers. Compression is not a new browser feature but HTTPS traffic is usually untouched.

ANDROID 5.0

Google ends the year with Android reaching version 4.2 on a few devices. In 2013, version 5.0 will make its debut, although no details are known as of now. The problem of version fragmentation might finally be addressed. Up till now, only select partners have built the Nexus device that accompany each new Android release. If Google expands the Nexus programme, several devices could run stock Android 5 at its launch.

SAMSUNG'S NEW STORE

Content providers for videos, music, games and apps need not necessarily be only Apple and Google. Amazon has tried its hand at an app store and now Samsung wants to follow. Samsung already has few offerings like the Music Hub and App Store, but all content is not available globally or pooled centrally in a portal. That is now being worked on.

NO FREE VERSION OF APPS - GOOGLE

Google has angered its user base by discontinuing the free Google Apps offering, which until recently allowed Gmail, Sites, Calender, Docs, Adsense and several other services to be used with custom domain names for free. Apps users will now have to pay at least $5(approx. Rs 275) per user per month. Up to 50 user accounts could be created per domain until mid - 2011, when Google reduced it to 10. The free tier was extremely popular with small businesses and casual users who only want email on their own domains but do not require Google's more business-centric features and technical support. The cost might prove too high for many customers, but Google is preparing to compete more fiercely for market share amongst business and enterprise users of email and online office suites. Educational institutions can still use Google apps for free and non-profits can get a discount.

UBUNTU ON MOBILE PHONES

Designed to make all your phone content easier to access and your apps more immersive – every edge has a specific purpose, making all your apps, content and controls instantly accessible, without navigating back to the home screen every time. And the Ubuntu phone fits perfectly into the wider family of Ubuntu interfaces, alongside the PC and TV. It's a uniquely, beautifully converged experience.

Ubuntu uses simple natural swiping gestures from the edges of the screen to make it easier than ever to access your content and switch between apps. Every edge of the phone is used, letting you move faster between apps, settings and content.

A short swipe from the left edge of the screen is all it takes to reveal your favourite apps. There’s room for everything you use daily, available instantly from the welcome screen or any application. Ubuntu lets you switch faster between running and favourite apps than any other phone.

Page either left or right from the home screen to see the content you use most. A full left-to-right swipe reveals a screen showing all your open apps, while a swipe from the right brings you instantly to the last app you were using. Switching between running applications has never been quicker or easier.

A swipe from the right edge takes you back to the last app you were using; another swipe takes you back to the app you used before that. It’s natural to keep many apps open at once, which is why Ubuntu was designed for multi-tasking. No other smartphone lets you switch between applications this quickly.
Swiping up from the bottom edge of the phone reveals app controls. You can hide or reveal them instantly, which means they don’t take up room on the screen, leaving you free to focus on the stuff  that matters. Immerse yourself in your photos, web pages, music, messages and apps.

Web applications sit alongside native apps on Ubuntu. They get their own icons and the same access to system notifications. So apps like Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps, Gmail and Spotify are all available – and thanks to Ubuntu’s web app APIs, it’s easy for web developers to install their  sites as full applications.
But Ubuntu isn’t limited to HTML5. Native apps are blazingly fast, taking advantage of the full capabilities of the phone’s processor and graphics hardware. And a mobile SDK does most of the work to give you that gorgeous, distinctive Ubuntu look and feel.

Run local Ubuntu apps and remote Windows apps on a secure docked phone – the new thin client of choice. Your Ubuntu phone can be managed with standard enterprise Ubuntu management tools that also handle servers, cloud infrastructure and desktops. Secure your infrastructure using Ubuntu’s browser and email client, delivering your legacy Office apps from your data centre.

Just tell your phone what you’re looking for and watch the results come in. If it’s a person, you’ll see data from your email and phone contacts alongside Facebook friends and followers on Twitter. Looking for music? Ubuntu doesn’t just search your phone. It also searches online retailers including Amazon and the Ubuntu One Music Store, putting the whole world of music at your fingertips, alongside your personal collection.

Ubuntu reinvents the inbox, giving you quicker access to all your emails, texts, calls and social media posts. See every message as it comes in and reply in an instant; just swipe down from the top when a new one arrives and respond directly to Facebook, Twitter, email, SMS and good old-fashioned telephone calls.
Bring the world to your fingertips, and organise it all beautifully. Swipe from the home screen to filter your searches to apps, people, music and so on. Swipe from the top to see your incoming messages. Everything is stylish, elegant and crisp.

The Gallery makes it easier than ever to organise, find and share your photos. Every shot is instantly uploaded to your Ubuntu One personal cloud account, making it available on all your devices – including those running iOS, Android and Windows.

Ubuntu includes native applications covering all the essentials you expect in a phone: telephony and voicemail, SMS and MMS, email, web browsing, photography, music and video.
Your phone will find it, let Ubuntu do the work.

3D PRINTED OBJECTS CAUSES TROUBLE

3D printer are soon going to be a huge headache for law enforcement agencies. Their ability to allow anyone to create objects cheaply and precisely means that cheap plastic copies of the keys that lock handcuffs are already being circulated. These keys are obviously highly protected, but are usually of the same design so that no one has to track down a particular key when it's needed. A German security worker who only goes by the name "Ray" demonstrated copies of such keys he managed to obtain on his own. These could be distributed cheaply and concealed by criminals who would then later use them to escape. A separate initiative that calls itself the "Wiki Weapon Project" is trying to create a blueprint for a firearm that anyone can duplicate at home using existing 3D printers.
